Snooker Rules - How To Play Snooker

Snooker first originated back in India during the second half of the 19th century among British Army officers stationed there.

Growing in popularity, the Billiards Association and Control Club, now the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA), was formed in 1919.

The first World Snooker Championship took place in 1927. Joe Davis, a key figure and pioneer in the early growth of the sport, won the championship 15 straight times between 1927 and 1946.

Equipments:

  • Snooker Table: A standard snooker table is 6ft wide and 12ft long
  • Snooker Balls: Snooker balls are made of phenolic resine composite and measure in general 2"1/16
  • Snooker Cue: Snooker Cues varies between 57" to 59" in length and come in 1 piece or with 3/4 joint with an average tip size between 9mm to 11mm
  • Cloth: Snooker is played on a woolen cloth (napped) of green color

Basic rules

The objective of the game is to score more points than the opponent by using the white cue ball to pot the colored balls in sequence. You must always pot a red color ball first before potting another colored balls, in general the black ball, to score additional points. Once all the red color balls are potted, the other colored balls must be potted in the following sequence : Yellow, Green, Brown, Blue, Pink, Black. Once all the balls are potted, the player with the highest score wins the frame.

The red color balls are worth 1 point each and the other colored balls are worth between 2 to 7 points.

Terminology

  • Cue Ball: White Ball used to pot the coloured balls
  • Red: Red coloured balls, there are 15 red colour balls worth 1 point each
  • Colour: One of the six coloured balls that are neither red or white
  • Pot: The action of putting a colour ball into a pocket by using a cue ball and a cue
  • Foul: Execute a shot against the rule
  • Snookered: To be unable to roll the cue ball in a straght line to hit the nominated ball
  • Century Break: Score of 100 points or more within one visit at the table without missing a shot
  • Maximum Break: Maximum score of 147 point within one visit at the table without missing a shot.
