We recommended a minimum of 5’ behind each end of the table and 3’ to each side. If you don't mind leaning on furniture or hitting the occasional wall, you may be able to get away with a smaller playing area. Also consider your rooms ceiling height. Low ceilings and hanging light fixtures may get in the way of flying balls.
If you have an outside area that is fairly level, consider an outdoor ping pong table. This will give you more playing room and makes for great game summertime fun.
